to checkout stuff from the cvs do the following: 

cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anonymous@xdv.org:/space/cvs login

leave password emtpy at the prompt

cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anonymous@xdv.org:/space/cvs co modulename
